Synopsis
At Discount Diva, a fast-fashion store in the Mall of Athens, the employees are too busy chasing their own dreams – money, fame, love, or adventure – to actually do their jobs. Michael schemes to get rich, Alice craves fame, Maria searches for love, and Peter plays detective, all while their former boss let them get away with it. But now, the store is a disaster – crowded yet failing, with clothes ruined, theft rampant, and sales plummeting.
That’s where Vicky comes in. A control-freak manager hired to fix the chaos, she quickly learns that the staff is beyond saving. While HQ expects her to fire any out-of-focus employees, she’s haunted by a past tragedy that makes it impossible. Forced to find alternative ways to regain control, every plan she devises backfires, escalating the mess. As the team fights to keep their dreams alive, Vicky must decide: be a boss, or be human.
Writer’s statement
Alarm clock rings. Rush out the door, lunchbox in hand. Squeeze into the metro or bus during rush hour. Get shoved. Be hyper-productive. Eat lunch in minutes. Back to work. Commute home, exhausted. Cook, prepare for tomorrow. Watch something light. Sleep. Repeat. And postpone – again – the dentist, the dream vacation, the plan to start a family. This is the daily grind of our protagonists, a group of underpaid workers who fuel their routines with dreams and illusions. Though they have contracts, their wages barely cover life’s necessities. It’s a reality shared by millions – not just in Greece but worldwide – where an ever-growing number of poor people serve the interests of an ever-shrinking elite. This backdrop sets the stage for a satire on a world consumed by speed: fast food, fast fashion, fast money, fast news, fast relationships, fast fitness. And where better to explore this paradox than a low-cost fast fashion store? A place where mass consumption generates enormous profits while workers earn meager wages with no job security. Typically, such jobs are high-pressure, physically exhausting, and customer-driven. But at Discount Diva, the usual rules don’t apply. Here, the employees are in control – unprofessional and untouchable – allowing us to tackle heavy themes with a comedic twist. It’s no coincidence that a Greek and a Portuguese writer found common ground in this story. Both countries, beloved tourist destinations, offer cheap pleasures – sun, food, culture. But for locals, reality is far less idyllic. Wages are low, the cost of living relentless, and for many, survival is the only real goal.At the heart of this world is Vicky, Discount Diva’s overwhelmed store manager, struggling to instill order in a team that has no intention of working. Meanwhile, her employees spend their shifts chasing success – through side hustles, fame, love, and delusions of grandeur. But at the end of the day, success remains a mirage.
