Synopsis
A fatal accident on THE BEAST turns the life of a successful, traveling show family upside down. Fresh mom Diana starts making illegal deals with obscure tech-entrepreneur Merle DeClerq to heal her partner’s PTSD and save their business. In return Merle expects Diana to distribute her magic mushrooms across Europe, hidden in their new roller coaster. When Diana hires helping hand Bogdan, actually an undercover, she spirals down into her worst nightmare.

When I first watched the documentary « Achterbahn » two years ago, about Berlin’s closed fairground Spreepark, I was struck by the tragic fate of the Witte-family. It reminded me of ancient Greek myths. Suddenly the story angle of a young show-mother and her struggle came to my mind: How to care in a careless society? In a time where many people suffer from loneliness and mental health issues, this tv show highlights the importance of care and collaboration way beyond motherhood itself. By showing Diana’s fight for staying self-determined in a world of traveling funfair business’ – a diverse community shaped by neoliberal capitalism –, I want to explore what we can learn from her experience, challenging our own reality. Funfair Affair has a thrilling premise for a contemporary European tv show, that offers a family drama with thriller stakes and a female pov. Set in a visually rich arena, it showcases an intriguing microcosm within different European countries. It’s unique story angle and theme set up a promising potential for further seasons. If you liked the gripping, emotional and suspenseful stories about family in Ozark, the female pov in drug trafficking in Queen Of The South and the visual style of Enter The Void… you will definitely like Funfair Affair.
